Moving field notes

A useful next step for every week of the move.

Our guide library is built around decisions and checklists—not filler. Start with the complete eight-week plan, then use the calculators when a quantity blocks the next step.

01 / Define the move

Plan

Build the inventory, measure access, choose the service model, and remove what should not travel.

02 / Control the agreement

Hire

Compare providers, verify interstate service, organize records, and schedule address and utility handoffs.

03 / Execute the move

Move

Pack and protect the load, manage buildings and vehicles, and run moving day under real conditions.

04 / Restore the household

Settle

Move pets safely, verify delivery, and rebuild essential routines during the first week.

The eight-week moving map

A calmer move separates decisions from packing. Make expensive and hard-to-reverse choices first; leave everyday items available until they are genuinely no longer needed.

8 weeks

Choose the move format, make an inventory, and start a keep/sell/donate pass.

6 weeks

Measure large furniture, compare transport options, and collect packing supplies.

4 weeks

Pack low-use rooms, confirm dates, and create a change-of-address list.

2 weeks

Pack most rooms, separate essentials, and confirm access at both addresses.

Move week

Finish packing, photograph valuable items, label priority boxes, and protect documents.

Start with the inventory, not the boxes

Before estimating supplies, identify furniture and large items that will not make the move. Packing an item and deciding later wastes time, space, and transport capacity. Once the inventory is stable, use the moving box calculator to build a first supply list.

Prefer paper?

The printable moving planner workbook turns the core process into six worksheets for inventory, access measurements, quote comparison, move-week handoff, and arrival condition notes.
