Use this guide

Unpack by household function, not by whichever carton is nearest. First make the home safe and able to support sleep, hygiene, food, medication, work, school, children, and pets. Then verify the shipment and build permanent storage slowly enough to avoid redoing it.

01
Day zero

First hours: secure and document

Before broad unpacking, control keys and entrances, photograph initial condition, confirm essential utilities, and check for immediate hazards. Keep one route clear from the main entrance to sleeping areas and bathrooms. Do not stack boxes against heaters, panels, exits, or unstable furniture.

  • Test locks, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and essential lighting
  • Photograph rooms, meters, and existing damage
  • Confirm water, power, temperature control, and urgent contacts
  • Create a safe room for children or pets
  • Place tools, medication, valuables, and documents under control
02
Hours one to twelve

First night: restore the body routines

Set up beds, bathroom basics, medication, drinking water, a simple meal, and clothing for the next day. Assemble only the furniture needed for safe sleep and basic seating. Keep the first-night kit separate until every item in it has a permanent location.

  • Build and inspect sleeping surfaces
  • Set up toilet paper, towels, soap, and needed accessibility items
  • Prepare one meal and one breakfast
  • Charge phones and essential devices
  • Lay out the next day's clothing, work, school, and pet supplies
03
Check the shipment

Day one: verify the delivery

Compare furniture and carton counts with the inventory while labels and placement are still visible. Inspect high-risk items and record missing or damaged property promptly. Keep packaging needed for evidence or returns until the issue is resolved.

  • Reconcile room counts and individually listed items
  • Inspect fragile, valuable, electronic, and upholstered pieces
  • Photograph damage in context and close detail
  • Keep mover documents, labels, and written notices together
  • Follow contract instructions and deadlines for reporting issues
04
Restore daily use

Days two and three: build working rooms

Finish one functional zone at a time. A complete bathroom, workable kitchen station, and usable clothing area reduce decision fatigue more than half-opening every room. Flatten empty cartons only after confirming they contain no parts, hardware, or small items.

  • Complete one bathroom and one food-preparation zone
  • Set up medication, laundry, and daily clothing storage
  • Establish charging, keys, mail, and waste locations
  • Connect work or school equipment needed this week
  • Keep a labeled box for items that belong elsewhere
05
Test the layout

Days four through six: place before decorating

Position large furniture around clear walking paths, doors, vents, outlets, and actual routines. Live with the arrangement before hanging art or filling every cabinet. Use the inventory to identify unopened boxes whose contents may not deserve permanent space.

  • Confirm doors, drawers, windows, and vents operate freely
  • Anchor furniture and manage cords as appropriate for the household
  • Group items by point of use
  • Set aside duplicates and immediate donation candidates
  • Wait to hang heavy or valuable wall items until placement is stable
06
Reset the plan

Day seven: close the first-week loop

Review unresolved damage, returns, utility problems, address changes, access items, and packing material. Create a short second-week list based on household impact rather than room appearance. Leave low-use decor and archival boxes for later.

  • Submit or track outstanding property and shipment notices
  • Return rental equipment and provider equipment due now
  • Recycle, donate, or store packing material through approved channels
  • Update the inventory with final locations and unresolved items
  • Choose the next five tasks and stop expanding the list
